Updates in Grade 1/2

We have had a very busy Term.

We participated in Junior House Athletics and had lots of fun! It was a beautiful morning to participate in the different rotations that Ms. Jo organised for all of the students across Foundation and Grade 1/2.

On Friday night all students came along to our Big Night In.
The students enjoyed a performance from a magician who performed many MAGIC tricks!
He even turned a sheet into a REAL rabbit!

We are looking forward to House Music on December 6th… more to come from the 1/2 Learning Community!

a SPRING in our step…

Spring is finally here. Term 3 has kept us on our toes! We have continued with our Dance classes every Thursday and the students have been learning a dance to perform to an audience. They are very excited to showcase this as a whole-school.  Next Term, the students will be participating in Gymnastics sessions!

With the warmer weather approaching, all students are now asked to bring their hats to school. No hate, no play…no fun today!

A quick reminder to please ensure that your child has returned their portfolio to school. These were taken home last Term on the last day of school and are required back at school to fill up!

We are holding an Expo on Tuesday, 18th September at 2.15pm as part of our Unit of Inquiry. All parents, grandparents and friends are invited to come into our learning spaces to see!

Term 3

Term 3 has started off with our dancing classes that are taking place every Thursday.
In the Thursday 26th July, all students participated in an incursion that explored robotics and coding. This is in relation to our new ‘Big Idea’ this Term:

A quick reminder to everyone about the importance of reading. Students can choose books from their reading tubs in their learning space or the library (either during their session or at lunchtimes when it is open).

Children get greater benefits if you take the time to play family games, discuss news items from the newspaper or TV, visit places of social, historic or natural interest, cook together, garden together or build together. These activities make learning interesting and enjoyable and encourage children to see the value in becoming lifelong learners.

Book Week is this week and students are invited to join in on the fun on Thursday 23rd August…where students across the school will dress up as book characters!

Term 2 Update!

Welcome back to Term 2… in Grade 1 and 2!

We’ve had some special events this Term already including:

Our swimming program has started!
We have been taking swimming lessons and learning lots of new skills in the pool.

The swimming program allows all students to explore a range of ways to be active. It also develops their  understanding of how to be safe in aquatic or natural settings.

Cross Country was held on Thursday, 26th April.
Students were thrilled with the competitive nature of the race but the vibe throughout the morning was certainly full of encouragement from peers cheering to ‘do your best!’

The Ripponlea houses (Carrington, Orrong, Loch and Furneaux) were also awarded extra house points for showing good behaviour and demonstrating ‘Community’ and ‘Respect’, both some of our school values.

Students were called up in their age groups and some of them even ran all around the block!

This Term our Big Idea is:

We are well on our way with exploring the wonders of Light and Sound. Looking at these concepts like real scientists…where we conduct experiments to further investigate and report on our findings.

We are excited to announce that we will be taking on ‘Helpers’ in the classroom after Week 4 of this Term.

We encourage parents/guardians/grandparents to come into our learning communities to help support the students with their learning. An email will be directed from all Class Reps to further inform of specific days/dates/times of availability!

Update on Term 1

Term 1 has been SO busy already!
We have lots of exciting things happening at the moment in our learning spaces.

In Maths, students have been exploring place value and looking at addition and subtraction.
In English, we have started ‘Literacy Groups’ where all students work on their personal reading, comprehension and word study.

This term our Literacy Group are called:
Waterfalls, Jungles, Rainforests, Oceans, Deserts, Cities and Canyons…that are all landscapes!?
What’s that you say? Why landscapes? WELL. Our Inquiry Unit and ‘Big Idea’ for the Term has included investigating natural, managed and constructed landscapes…

In relation to our Inquiry, students have been studying a book called ‘Flat Stanley’.

Stanley is a boy who had an accident with a noticeboard and unfortunately became flat! He uses this to his advantage and experiences some wonderful adventures…

Currently, we are asking students to help Flat Stanley along in his next adventure. Students will bring home their own Flat Stanley, to treat like a guest and introduce him to their local area!

To further enhance our understanding, the Grade 1/2’s  will be going on our excursion this Term on Monday, 19th March. Please look out for the notice sent home for further information!
Please don’t forget to remind your child to bring their satchel both to and from school to change their book daily and collect any notices.
